From June 1836 (and definitely by November ben 1836) until July 1836 the schooner was commanded by Jacob Sawyer. Destinations mentioned include: Puerto Rico, Mount Desert, Lubec, Williamstown, New York, Port au Plat, St. Domingo, and others
Description: Horse-shoe life ring from Daybreak, a Hinckley sailboat owned by Harry R. Madeira, and sailed out of Northeast Harbor. The boat's name "Daybreak" is painted on the front in gold paint, and the Madeira signal flag and Northeast Harbor Fleet burgee appear below. On the edge of the buoy is a stamped label with the brand "Horseshoe Jim-Buoy", and other illegible information. The back is unadorned
Description: Luere B. Deasy was born on February 8, 1859 in Gouldsboro to Daniel and Emma L. (Moore) Deasy. He was educated at the State Normal School in Castine. He did not attend college, but received a law degree from Boston University Law School. Deasy was admitted to the Bar in 1884. Prior to sitting on the Court, Deasy practiced in Bar Harbor. Deasy served as President of both the Hancock County Bar Association and the Maine State Bar Association. He was elected to the Maine State Senate and served as its President. Deasy was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court by Governor Milliken on September 25, 1918. On October 1, 1929, he was appointed Chief Justice by Governor Gardiner. He served as Chief until his retirement on February 7, 1930, when he returned to private practice in Bar Harbor. Deasy died on March 13, 1940, in Portland, at the age of 81. Description: Reefer Jacket, also known as Reefer Coat, a common article of clothing worn by seamen and sailors in the nineteenth century. Jacket is double-breasted, with velvet trim, and has ten metal buttons.
Description: Hooked rug showing a motorboat underway, with flags flying. The boat appears to be the Maine Seacoast Mission Vessel "Sunbeam I" and the rug may have been made as part of the Maine Seacoast Mission's hooked rug program. Rug dimensions are 24"x51", appears to be rebound using green fabric. A rug with similar waves and clouds, as well as Sunbeam I, may be found in Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society Spring Bulletin, April 1926, page 11. Description: Photograph taken from the area of the Samuel Gilpatrick Homestead looking toward the Rock End Hotel, near Gilpatrick Cove Northeast Harbor. In the foreground is Herman Savage's cottage, "The Wedge," designed by his architect brother, Fred L. Savage, in 1885. Two children stand on the side of the road, and an unidentified structure is visible beyond the hotel. In the distance, the northern shores of Great Cranberry Island can be seen. The Rock End Hotel was originally called the Revere House and was opened by Herman L. Savage in the summer of 1884. The Wedge was built by A. Torrey, a contractor from Southwest Harbor, in the winter of 1885-1886. The Rock End Hotel burned in March, 1942. The Wedge was purchased by the Roberts family and remodeled in 1944-45, following plans by Philadelphia architect Edmund Gilchrist. It remains a private residence today. [show more]
